What is the 187 visa Australia?

This visa allows a skilled worker to gain permanent residence by working in a regional area of Australia. Also known as the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS), the 187 visa is applicable to both skilled workers living abroad or skilled workers who are residing temporarily in Australia.

For applicants in Australia, a valid substantive visa or a bridging visa A, B, or C is mandatory. The 187 Visa is simple two step process:
a) You need to be nomination by an approved Australian employer.
b) You, a skilled worker, need to apply a 187 visa application under the nominated stream.

187 Visa Application Pathways:

Direct Entry:
This nomination stream is for an applicant who has either briefly or never worked in Australia and is formally qualified in his/her occupation.

Temporary Residence Transition:
This stream is for current 457 visa holders who have worked for at least two years in the same occupation with their nominating employer.

Agreement stream:
Under this stream subclass 457 visa holders can be nominated by their employer via a labour agreement.

The 187 visa requirements:

For you to be eligible for a 187 Visa, these conditions should be fulfilled, unless exempted otherwise:

  • The employer’s business must be located in a regional area.
  • The nominated position/job must be located in a regional area, also.
  • Fulfill the English language requirements, skills and qualifications.
  • Must be nominated by an approved Australian employer.
  • The nomination was approved less than six months prior to applying for 187 visa.
  • Be under the age of 50 years.

A key point here to note is that the RSMS subclass 187 visa covers all of Australia except the following places:
